Arrest warrant for man over Toshiba research data leak

The Metropolitan Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for a former engineer at a chipmaker affiliated with Toshiba Corp., who allegedly leaked research data related to the NAND-type flash memory, Toshiba’s flagship product, to a major South Korean chipmaker, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The MPD will soon launch a criminal investigation into the case.

According to investigative sources, a Japanese man in his 50s, who lives in Fukuoka Prefecture, allegedly copied research data related to the NAND-type flash memory to storage media at Toshiba’s Yokkaichi plant in Mie Prefecture when he was an employee of a chipmaker affiliated with Toshiba around spring 2008. He then allegedly provided the data to SK Hynix Inc. after the South Korean chipmaker hired him.
