千葉県で起きた通り魔事件に関するニュースです。この中に出てくる”work”が気になりました。今までは，「仕事，研究，業績」などという意味しか知らず，”work”は積極的な意味で使われるものであると考えていましたが，今回の記事では適切ではないです。『Wisdom英和辞典（第三版）』（三省堂）で別の意味を調べると「（力などの）作用，働き，行為，しわざ」というものがあり，例文に”the crime was the work of outsiders”というものが掲載されています。消極的な意味でも使われることがわかりました。”work”の語源は「行う」であり，良い意味でも悪い意味でも使うことができると学びました。（Ume）
Man killed, 3 others stabbed in same street within 10 minutes in Chiba

A 31-year-old man was stabbed to death in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, and three others wounded on Monday night, in what police believe was the work of one attacker.
According to police, all four attacks took place within 10 minutes on a 50-meter-long poorly-lit street in Akebono, Kashiwa.
NTV quoted police as saying the first attack took place at around 11:35 p.m. when a man on his bike was slashed. A few minutes later, Hiroya Ikema was stabbed several times in the neck and back and his briefcase and wallet were stolen. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
