Adelina Sotnikova of Russia stuns Yuna Kim for figure skating gold

SOCHI -- Adelina Sotnikova has an Olympic gold medal, and she didn't need anyone's help to get it.

Or did she?

Sotnikova responded to her snub in the team competition by winning figure skating's ultimate prize Thursday night, upsetting defending champion Yuna Kim and giving Russia its first Olympic gold in women's skating in the process.

"It helped a lot that I did not participate in the team event. I got really angry and decided I WILL get a medal in the individual event," Sotnikova said through a translator. "This was my goal and I made it."

But figure skating being figure skating, it wasn't quite as simple as that.

The results raised plenty of eyebrows, particularly the 5.50 point gap between Sotnikova and Kim. This wouldn't be the first time a skater benefitted from home cooking, and many had already questioned the generous component marks Evgeni Plushenko and Julia Lipnitskaia received in the team competition.

home cookingは「家庭料理」ですが、ここではまちがいなく「地元有利の採点」という意味ですね。(Shou-VR*)
