mercuryと言いますと「水銀」を想起しますが、転じて、文中では第三語義の「[the 〜](温度計・気圧計の)水銀柱(が示す温度[気圧]」『Wisdom英和辞典(第三版)』(三省堂)となります。念のためOxford Dictionaries Onlineも参照してみますと’ the column of mercury in a thermometer or barometer, or its height as indicating atmospheric temperature or pressure ‘と掲載されていました。(Shou-VR*)
