Suspected rapist flees during questioning

A 20-year-old rape and robbery suspect is on the run after fleeing a district prosecutors' office near Tokyo. He had been brought there for questioning on Tuesday.

Yuta Sugimoto was arrested on suspicion of raping a woman and robbing her of about 1,400 dollars in Kawasaki City last Thursday.

The suspect was meeting a lawyer when he made his escape. A police officer and an official were guarding him. He had a rope around his waist but was not handcuffed. He took the rope off and dashed out of the room without his sandals.

Police later found a white sweatshirt about 100 meters from the office.

The news has frightened people in the area, especially parents. Schools are sending their students home in groups.

Police have mobilized some 2,700 officers, 850 vehicles, and 2 helicopters to locate the suspect.
