Soccer: Honda leaves for Italy as AC Milan begins paperwork

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan international midfielder Keisuke Honda left Japan on Saturday to begin his Italian Serie A career with AC Milan.

A crowd of about 100 fans gathered to wish the 27-year-old playmaker well on his new adventure while his new team said on Friday they had begun the necessary procedure with the Italian Football Federation to complete Honda's signing.

"Even for a club like Milan, used to signing some of the world's best ever players, the media interest surrounding Honda's signing will be intense," Milan said in an article on their official website under the headline "Countdown to Honda."
AC Milan have begun the procedure for Honda to obtain a work permit and certification of international transfer. Club director Umberto Gandini is looking after the details.

"The club is big in Japan and players such as (Ruud) Gullit, (Marco) Van Basten and more recently (Andrea) Pirlo and (Filippo) Inzaghi know something about that," the article said.

"Japanese television stations and print journalists confirmed the enormous fan base that the club enjoys in Japan in the last few months."
AC Milan is scheduled to throw a big unveiling event for Honda at their home ground, San Siro, on Wednesday, while his first game appears likely to be away to Sassuolo on Jan. 12.
