9 year-old-boy burned alive by father in murder-suicide dies in hospital
The 9 year-old-boy that was burned alive by his father in a murder-suicide bid succumbed to his injuries on Monday, a week after the horrendous incident. The boy had been in critical condition since December 23, with burns all over his body and never regained consciousness until he passed away on the morning of December 30.
49-year-old Ryutaro Mogi died on the same day after he set himself and his son, Yotaro, on fire at the Shiomi Elementary School, Bunkyo Ward in Tokyo where the boy was a student. Witnesses say the boy was playing baseball when his father approached him at around 10:30 a.m. He led him away from the playground and then doused the two of them in kerosene before igniting the fire with a lighter, while holding the boy close to him. They were rushed to a hospital by onlookers, but the man died later that night from severe burns while the boy was declared to be in critical condition.
The man was separated from his 40-year-old wife and their two sons since September 2010. They were in the middle of custody arrangements over the boys as they were in the final stages of divorce proceedings. There were already restrictions in place as to how often he could visit his children due to abuse allegations from his soon to be ex-wife.
