数えられるようになったemail
下のLineという表現に関する記事に関連して、E-mailが広まりはじめた頃（Eudoraの時代だった！）に書いたエッセイです。（UG）

「電子メール，Eメール」。electronic mailの略。ハイフン付きでE-mail/e-mail，もしくはハイフンなしでEmail/E mail/emailと綴られる。イギリス系の英語話者は前者の綴りを，アメリカ系は後者を好むとされる。
その電子メールが普及しはじめた当初，E-mailということばは，I have saved all the e-mail I received over the past week.（p. 277, Cambridge Dictionary of American English）と非可算名詞として扱われ，数えなければならない場合には，I got seven e-mail messages today.と表現されていた。しかし，今ではI had to send more than 20 e-mails in one hour.といった言い方が普通になってきた。
・Ayumi sent me her reply by [via] e-mail./I found your e-mail address on your school's homepage. /Moe saw her posting for an e-mail pal on the Internet.
その使い方に注意が必要なのが，今やe-mailの対語となった感のある，snail-mail/snail mail（通常の郵便）である。これはアメリカのハッカー（hacker）から広まったとされる（p. 2561,『ランダムハウス英和大辞典2版』）。これはこれで味があり，決して切り離されるべきではないと考えるが，おじさんの考えか。
元来は名詞であっても，それが現代生活には欠かせないもので，頻繁に使用されるようになると動詞として使われる。目的語をとる他動詞としてのe-mailもそんな一例である。I'll e-mail you again soon.
・"Do you think you can e-mail me the paper as an attached file? — "No problem. I'll send it in five minutes"./Let me fax it now./ I'd like to video(tape) my son's performance./Do you think you can Fedex this for me?
