Inferno destroys more than 40 cars at Sydney Olympic Park and injures five

Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Police investigators yesterday continued to work through the large crime scene looking for clues as to what may have sparked the fire which destroyed close to 50 and damaged more than 30 cars at Sydney Olympic Park.
Flemington acting crime manager Inspector Adam Scanlon said the cause was yet to be determined and police were relying on information from the public to see if it was a stray cigarette butt that ignited the blaze.

He wouldn't say if any cigarette butts had been collected and possibly DNA tested but the possible damage bill would be in excess of seven figures.

Insp Scanlon said there were more than 100 vehicles in the car park when the blaze broke out and that some of the cars with "light or nil" damage had been returned to their owners.

"There are many others still at the scene. We will go where the evidence takes us," he said.

NSW Fire and Rescue's Inspector Ian Krimmer said the fire was either started by the exhaust of a car or a cigarette.

"All signs are pointing towards a cigarette butt, it's the most likely scenario but we will have to wait for the final determination from investigators," he said.
He said firefighters had a tough time control the blaze in hot temperatures, strong winds and low humidity.
