Woman killed while trying to save elderly man at train crossing

A 40-year-old woman was fatally hit by a train here while trying to save an elderly man who was lying face down inside a railway crossing.

According to local police and other sources, Yokohama resident Natsue Murata tried to help a 74-year-
old man who was lying inside the railroad crossing between Kamoi and Nakayama stations on the JR Yokohama Line in Midori Ward, Yokohama, at around 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 1.

Murata was in her father Shigehiro's car waiting for trains to pass when she saw the man lying face down inside the crossing. As she reached the man to help him escape, she was hit by an outbound train. The man survived with a broken collarbone.

Although the train driver noticed them inside the crossing and hit the brakes, and pedestrians pushed an emergency-stop button near the crossing, it was too late for the train to stop before hitting Murata.

"She was a kind person even when she was little. I want to tell her that the man she tried to save survived," Murata's 67-year-old father told reporters.

Shigehiro said Murata was working at a real estate agency that he owns about 300 meters west from the site of the accident. They saw the elderly man when they were driving to the office.

"She got out of the car saying she had to help the man," recalled Shigehiro. Although he told her not to go, she went ahead to the crossing. "She probably thought she had to do something about it," the father said.

An alarm and crossing gates are installed at the site, which is located at a shopping street near Nakayama Station. Police are investigating how the man came to lie down on the tracks inside the crossing.
