old chestnut
Japan Newsのコラムで久しぶりに発音が取り上げられていました。
old chestnutは「たびたび引用されるセリフ、格言」などの意味ですが、ときに「古くさい、手垢のついた」というネガティブなニュアンスでも用いられます。
Guestさんの論調も明治以来のもので、じゃあどうしたら発音の脱英米化信仰ができるのか、教育の中でどのようにそれを具現化できるのかということを論じてほしいと思います。

Behind me, a Vietnamese neurologist is discussing the effectiveness of a new product being peddled by a pharmaceutical salesman from South Korea. Off to my left, a PhD student from Thailand is trying to grasp the details of a poster staffed by a neurotoxin researcher from Hong Kong. I have just exited a session of medical presentations by speakers from India, Malaysia and Japan.
They are, of course, all speaking English, and no one sounds Anglo-American like me. In fact, so-called inner circle English speakers here are very few. Not surprisingly, the accents are varied, and understanding has to occasionally be negotiated, but it’s not a real impediment. Welcome to the new reality of international English, where the Anglo-American model seems somehow quaint and “foreign.”
The Japanese speaker sounded Japanese, the Thai speaker Thai, the Hong Kong Chinese audibly from South China, and yet they communicated content with detail and precision despite very different pronunciations. So this begs the question: Why try to make them all sound like me? What’s wrong with a Korean’s English sounding slightly Korean; a Japanese sounding Japanese? Is it something we should try to eliminate or make people feel ashamed of?
The “problem” of English pronunciation in Japan is exaggerated and, in many cases, misdiagnosed. The old chestnut is that katakana interferes with “proper” pronunciation, rendering much of Japanese English unintelligible. I beg to differ.

発音といえば明治時代に突入した「八重さん」を再びチラ見しました。作り物（entertainment）とはいえ、昨日の放送分では熊本バンドがえらく悪い集団のように描かれていて、同バンドを研究されている方々の心中はおだやかではなかったのでは？
個人的にはreligionを「宗教」と訳し、キリスト教布教に尽力した小崎 弘道の英語がnatural過ぎて逆に気になりました。L. L. Janesは徹底したintuitive-imitativeの手法で学生を鍛えたことは事実ですが、いくらなんでもあそこまでは...。俳優の短いセリフの母音からの判断ですが、North Americanというか、少しCanada寄りの発音のような印象を持ちました。ドラマの英語指導はあの方でしょうが、英語教育史の史実までは押さえてはおられないようですね。（UG）
