大相撲の元大関把瑠都が11日，日本相撲協会に引退届を提出しました。夏場所で痛めた古傷の左膝の回復具合が思わしくなく，秋場所の番付発表後に決断したようです。
「答える」という意味のrespondには「〈患者・病気が〉（治療に）よい反応を示す，効果を示す」という意味があります（『アドバンストフェイバリット英和辞典』東京書籍）。今回は「膝は治療の甲斐もなく回復せず」と解釈できます。（Koyamamoto）

Ex-ozeki Baruto retires
Former ozeki Baruto, hampered in recent years by a left knee injury, has opted to retire after deciding he would be unable to rejuvenate his career from the second-tier juryo division.
The 28-year-old Estonian, one of the few Europeans to make it to the highest levels in sumo, submitted his retirement notice Wednesday to the Japan Sumo Association.
Baruto was forced to drop out during this year’s May tournament when he reaggravated his knee injury, then pulled out of the July tournament. That made him the third former ozeki to drop to juryo.
Baruto had planned to continue rehab efforts in preparation for this month’s Autumn tournament, but the knee failed to respond and he was unable to train at all.
