シルクロードや仏教をテーマとした文化勲章受章者の故平山郁夫画伯の妻が相続財産のうち、現金約２億円を申告しなかったとして、東京国税局から遺産隠しを指摘されました。大好きな絵なので個人的にもちょっとショックでした。

Widow of celebrated artist accused of tax evasion

The widow of the late, celebrated artist Ikuo Hirayama has been accused by the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau (TRTB) of failing to declare around 300 million yen's worth of inheritance in her tax declarations, it has been learned.

According to an insider, in 2010 the widow made a tax declaration on a home in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, and other inherited property, but a subsequent tax investigation by the TRTB found around 200 million yen in unreported, inherited cash in the widow's home. The TRTB believes the widow was aware of the cash and purposely avoided declaring it. The rest of the undeclared money, around 100 million yen, is attributed to undervaluing Hirayama's royalty income.

"Do you have anything to declare?"は海外の空港で入国をする際にはおなじみの質問です。 "to tell a customs official that you are carrying goods on which you should pay tax when you enter a country"はLDOCEにあるdeclareの定義ですが、こちらの用法のイメージが強すぎて、税金を申告する場合も同じくdeclareを使うことを忘れてしまっていました（こっちの方がdeclareの第一義でしたね！恥ずかしい〜！）。その第一義は"to state on an official government form how much money you have earned, what property you own etc"と定義されます。名詞 declarationと場合は申告するものが複数にわたる場合には当然、数えることができます。自戒を込めての復習でした。（Nat）
