昨日取り上げたStevie Wonderの記事に関連する記事を追ってみました。その中から気になった表現を取り上げさせていただきます。
George Zimmerman Found Not Guilty In Trayvon Martin’s Murder, Musicians React on Twitter
George Zimmerman, the man accused of killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012, was found not guilty in a Florida court today (July 13). The jury of six women deliberated for 16 hours and 20 minutes before arriving at their verdict. Zimmerman was also found not guilty of the lesser offense of manslaughter, which the jury also weighed.

ここで気になったのは、manslaughterという表現です。これは以前先輩が取り上げてられていますので復習になります。cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20120724/1343060421
slaughterには「（食肉用に）<動物>を屠殺する」「<多数の人>を虐殺する」などの意味がありますが、manslaughterで「殺人、故殺」という意味になります。また、これは殺人の中でも計画性のない場合に使われます。（『ウィズダム英和辞典　第３版』三省堂）これに対して「故意の[計画的な]殺人」はmurderを使います。さらに、「<人・爆弾などが><政治家などの要人>を暗殺する」という場合はassassinateで表します。
英英による定義は次のようになります。
Manslaughter: the crime of killing someone illegally but not deliberately (LDOCE)
Murder: the crime of deliberately killing someone (ibid)
Assassinate: murder (an important person) for political or religious reasons (Oxford Dictionaries Online)
