60,000 sunflowers in full bloom in western Japan
About 60,000 sunflowers are in full bloom in Tokushima Prefecture, western Japan. Former mandarin orange growers in Katsuura Town have switched to sunflowers. They planted them as part of an economic development project.
The flowers began to appear in late June. Sunflowers remind people of the arrival of summer as they bloom when the rainy season ends. The sunflowers will be at their best until July 20th.

ここのappear（「姿を見せる，出現する，現われる」）はおなじみの単語ですが、こういう文脈で、began toと一緒になると「突然、姿を見せるようになった、見かけるようになった」という訳がぴったりときます。ちなみにLDOCEには”to start to be seen, to arrive, or to exist in a place, especially suddenly"という定義があります。(Jakie）
