Members of elite firefighting Hotshots crew killed in Arizona wildfire trained for fierce conditions
They were the firefighting version of Navy SEAL Team 6.
The courageous crew of the Granite Mountain Hotshots — almost completely wiped out in Sunday’s monster wildfire in Arizona — was trained to handle such perilous conditions while staying in peak physical shape.
The Prescott, Ariz.-based squad was featured in a news profile in April 2012 role-playing extreme situations and wielding equipment they count on desperately to survive.
“When we get out there, it’s a completely different ballgame,” squad leader Daniel McCarty told the Cronkite News about battling the elements. “It’s the real deal. We have to look out for each other.”
