to watch the sunrise from the summit

昨日は富士山の山開きでした。世界遺産登録後、初の御来光を拝もうと期待した一般の登山者にはがっかりの山開きとなったようです。さてその御来光が気になりNHKのニュースをチェックしてみました。予想通り直訳はなくwatching the sunrise from the summitと表現してありました。blandで味わいのない感じです。(Nat)

Climbing season opens on Mount Fuji

The 2-month climbing season for Mount Fuji opened on Monday, drawing many more climbers than usual due to the mountain's new status as a World Heritage site.

Hundreds of people ascended the peak before dawn in hopes of watching the sun rise from the summit. But heavy clouds blocked the view.

Others were simply hoping to scale the legendary symbol and highest mountain in Japan.

A woman in her 50s said she wanted to climb Mount Fuji on the first day it opened under its new World Heritage standing.

In Yamanashi Prefecture, which straddles one side of the mountain, officials plan to double the number of guides on climbing trails. They say they expect many more visitors this year before the season closes at the end of August.

Local authorities aiming to prevent accidents on the mountain are warning against so-called "bullet climbing" overnight without a break.
