WhistleblowerのSnowden氏の消息はモスクワ空港でぱったりと消えたままです。rampantは経済関係などでよく見かけますが、ここでは「（うわさなど）が飛び交う、（憶測など）があれこれと出される」（"profusely widespread"--Webster）という意味で使われています。
なお、この単語は以前先生が授業で紋章学（heraldry）でよく使われるとおっしゃって、フランス車プジョーのエンブレムの意味合い（確か、a lion rampant？）を教えてくださいました（"standing on one hind foot with one foreleg raised above the other and the head in profile —used of a heraldic animal"--ibid.）（Haramii）
Speculation rampant about Snowden's whereabouts
There has been much speculation about the whereabouts of the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked covert US government surveillance programs. Edward Snowden has not been seen since he arrived at a Moscow airport on June 23rd. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday the whistleblower is in the transit area of the airport.
It's speculated that Snowden is at the lodging facility in the airport for transit passengers. Russian media, however, quote hotel employees as saying he stopped at the facility only for several hours upon arrival or he simply went there to ask about a table of accommodation fees. Russia's state-run RIA Novosti news agency says activity is increasing at a section in the transit area which is under the control of the Federal Security Service.
