to straddle

LDOCEには"if something straddles a line, road, or river, part of it is on one side and part on the other side"とあります。(Hatahata)

Mt. Fuji will likely become heritage site

UNESCO's World Heritage Committee is likely to recognize Japan's Mt. Fuji as a World Heritage site.

The committee ended the first day of its 3-day session in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh on Friday.

It will decide whether 30 candidates nominated by individual countries should be approved.

The committee examined 11 candidates and endorsed 8 of them on Friday.

Mt. Fuji is a cultural property candidate. It is expected to be screened first in the afternoon session on Saturday.

Observers say Japan's symbolic mountain is likely to be given an official endorsement as early as 4 PM, Japan time.

Japanese officials from the central government and the prefectures of Yamanashi and Shizuoka, which the mountain straddles, are in Phnom Penh to witness the historic moment.

Shizuoka Governor Heita Kawakatsu and Yamanashi Governor Shomei Yokouchi are among them.

The 2 governors are expected to be at the meeting site before the screening of Mt. Fuji begins. They will hold a news conference after the approval is announced.
