Some Say the Spelling of a Winning Word Just Wasn’t Kosher
The national spelling bee spelled it wrong.
Or so say mavens of Yiddish about the winning word, knaidel, in the widely televised Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night. Knaidel is the matzo ball or dumpling that Jewish cooks put in chicken soup.
But somebody may have farblondjet, or gone astray, the Yiddish experts say.
今回，取り上げるのはfarblondjetです。手持ちの辞書には見当たりませんでしたのでUrabn Dictionaryで調べると、"Yiddish for "completely lost" or "way out in left field." Literally lost, or figuratively, as when someone is given some information and comes to absolutely the wrong conclusion, like adding 2 and 2 and coming up with 7."とありました。
どうも後ろに続くgone astrayとほぼ同じ意味として用いられていると解釈しました。
go astrayにはご存知のように「（人が）道に迷う、話が脱線する」という意味が一義ですが，俗語では"to make an error"という意味もあります。Go astray - Idioms by The Free Dictionary。（Suagr）
