leverageの第一語義は勿論、「てこの作用；てこ装置」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）ですが、文中では、「（目的達成のための）力、影響力」（ibid）という意味になります。LDOCEで調べてみると、 ‘influence that you can use to make people do what you want’と定義されていました。他方ODOでもチェックしてみると、‘the ratio of a company’s loan capital (debt) to the value of its ordinary shares (equity)’と記載されており、財政的意味合いを内包することがわかりました。(Shou-VR*)
