まず、liftと聞くと、「持ち上げる」等の表現が一般的ですが、ここでは、イギリス英語で「（自動車などに）乗せること」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第３版』大修館）という意味なります。私が英国に居たときも、Do you need a lift?という表現をよく聞いたものです。念のため、ODOでもチェックしてみると、 ‘a free ride in another person’s vehicle’と記載されていました。ですので、hitch a liftで、「〜に乗せてもらう」あたりの意味になるでしょうか。(Shou-VR*)
