A Hobbled Cashman Goes Fishing for Infielders
That had even less chance of working, and there was almost no shot of getting Scott Rolen, another corner infielder Cashman had inquired about. But Cashman finally got a player to say yes Monday when he signed Ben Francisco only hours after Francisco had been released by the Cleveland Indians.
This time, Cashman pounced before the player had a chance to retire.
Francisco was signed to a minor league deal and is expected to play Wednesday, joining Matt Diaz and Juan Rivera in the competition for the outfield spot vacated — at least for April — by Curtis Granderson.
Unlike some of the other players Cashman has contemplated signing, Francisco, 31, is relatively young. He is a career .257 hitter with a .326 on-base percentage and a modest .751 on-base plus slugging percentage. In six years with five teams, he amassed 49 home runs and 104 doubles. Last year, he played for Toronto, Houston and Tampa Bay but hit just .240 with four homers in 82 games.
But such is the state of the undermanned Yankees, who have resorted to rather unusual measures to address the losses of Granderson and Mark Teixeira, both of whom have sustained arm injuries.
