Asahi Deal in New Zealand Goes Awry

Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings sa 2502.TO +0.99%ys its appetite for overseas acquisitions remains strong, but it apparently found one recent deal a bit too frothy.

Asahi said Thursday that it has taken legal action against the former owners of New Zealand’s Independent Liquor, which Asahi bought in 2011 for $1.3 billion. It accuses private equity firms Pacific Equity Partners, of Australia, and Hong Kong-based Unitas Capital of inflating the company’s Ebitda during the sale, causing Asahi to overpay.
Asahi, one of Japan’s leading brewers and beverage makers, says it started proceedings in a Melbourne court on Thursday.

Reporting its full-year results on Wednesday, Asahi said it booked a record net profit of Y57.18 billion ($611 million) thanks to recent acquisitions, but also a one-time charge of Y8 billion to cover a loss from the Independent Liquor deal.
