Scare as suspension bridge cable gives way in Shizuoka
HAMAMATSU, Shizuoka -- The cable of a small suspension bridge over a road here gave way as seven pedestrians were crossing it, leaving the bridge tilted on a 45 degree angle, though no one was injured, officials said.
The 32-meter-long bridge over National Route 152 in Hamamatsu tilted at around 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 10 after a part connecting one of the bridge's cables to the ground snapped. Prefectural police said the pedestrians were able to grasp onto a railing and avoided injury. The municipal government has closed the bridge. It has also closed the road because the bridge has sagged down over it.
According to the city's road department, the bridge was completed in 1965. Corrosion was found on it in a check in April last year, and the city had commissioned a private business to conduct a detailed examination of the bridge's condition.

(UG)
