Yoroku: A doctor's dream for recovery

As director of the Haramachi Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic, ob-gyn specialist Kyohei Takahashi stayed in the Fukushima Prefecture city of Minamisoma, where it had become nearly impossible to find adequate medical care following the outbreak of the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant disaster in March 2011. There, he continued to see patients, scrambled to take measurements of local residents' internal radiation exposure levels, and participated in decontamination efforts.

About a year ago, he could be found in his clinic wearing a surgical mask. He had been diagnosed with colon cancer two months after the triple disasters, and given six months to live. He was probably wearing the mask to protect against infection as his immunity became compromised. His voice was low, but there was passion in his words.

compromiseには妥協するのみならず、"to impair by disease or injury"(The American Heritage Dictionary)、すなわち「弱める」「低下する」という意味もあることは大丈夫でしたね(例:An immune system that was compromised by a virus.)。ちなみにコンピュータにもこの単語が使われはじめたことはAsahi Weekly(9/16/12)でも指摘しました。(UG)
