タイトル： Communication Strategies for EFL Learners: Developing Positive Attitudes and Communicative Power.

要旨：In this session we will talk about helping our EFL learners develop their conversational skills and positive attitudes about speaking English. In order to get input, to experience interaction, and to produce conversational output, our students need to participate in sustained conversations in English. But speaking a new language entails taking risks – and that is where communications strategies come into play.

We will first review a communication strategies framework that includes what are called (1) avoidance or reduction strategies, (2) achievement or compensatory strategies, (3) stalling or time-gaining strategies, and (4) the use of fillers or hesitation devices. We will relate these concepts to our own uses of communication strategies before examining an example of an activity that can be used to promote our learners’ development of communication strategies. We will consider how communication strategies can help students sustain conversations and develop positive attitudes as language learners. We will examine a specific activity for teaching communication strategies in EFL classes.

Participants will be given access to an extensive reference list on communication strategies.
