Review: 'Hansel and Gretel' makes grim viewing

Renner is entitled to cash in on his "Hurt Locker" acclaim and make a living like anybody else, but I'll bet he was more animated cashing his check than he is as a gun-toting medieval witch slayer, the little boy from Grimm's fairytale grown up with a chip on his shoulder and an inexplicable American accent (which is shared by his "sis," Gemma Arterton's leather-clad Gretel, but no one else in this neck of the woods).

今回取り上げる表現は、neck of the woodsです。見たことのある単語の組み合わせですが、直訳をしてもどのような意味になるのか想像するのは難しいと思いました。辞書を引いてみると、「（米・くだけた話）地域,地方,場所,」という語義と、in your [this] neck of the woods「君の住んでいる地域［この辺］に」（『ウィズダム英和辞典　第二版』三省堂）という例文がありました。
この表現の由来を調べてみると、OnlineEtymologyDictionaryには、"Transferred senses attested from c.1400. Phrase neck of the woods (American English) is attested from 1780 in the sense of "narrow stretch of woods;" 1839 with meaning "settlement in a wooded region.""とありました。元々はやはりwoods、木や森に関係のある意味から新たな意味が生まれたようです。また、過去にも先輩が同じ表現を取り上げられていますので、ご参照ください。cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20110514/1305366072
映画の予告編（trailer）を観てみましたが、現代風というのでしょうか、なかなか面白そうな映画です。（Astroriver）
