George steers Pacers past Heat

現地8日に行われたNBAマイアミ・ヒート対インディアナ・ペイサーズの一戦は，Paul Georg選手の29得点，11リバウンドをマークする活躍でホームのペイサーズが87対77で快勝しました。
今回採り上げるのはDY（01/10/13）の記事の見出しにあった言葉遊び。steerは自動車の「ステアリング」でもわかるように「…を操縦する」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味の動詞です。ここでは29得点，11リバウンドという活躍で「チームを牽引した」と訳せます。さらにチーム名にもなっているpacerは「（レースなどの先頭で）ペースを示す［馬, 自動車］」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）のこと。これは「インディアナポリスで有名なインディ500マイルレースに用いられるペースカーに由来」します（「インディアナ州政府駐日代表事務所」）。このチーム名だからこそsteerという動詞が用いられたのですね。（Koyamamoto）

George steers Pacers past Heat
INDIANAPOLIS―Paul George made no attempt to downplay the importance of his matchup with LeBron James.
"It's a chance to for me to see where I'm at, going against one of the best, if not, the best in the league," George said. "Another challenge to myself to go at LeBron. I definitely wanted to battle him."
George rose to the occasion with 29 points and 11 rebounds, and the Pacers held Miami to a season-low point total in an 87-77 win over the Heat on Tuesday night.
George has moved from shooting guard to small forward and has become a primary scoring option with Danny Granger, Indiana's leading scorer last season, out all season because of a left knee injury.
