本日はhot spotという表現に光を当ててみます。東日本大震災の後、原発事故の影響もあり、hot spotは、‘a place where there is a lot of heat or radiation’ LDOCEという第一義を思い浮かべる人も多いかと思われます。しかし、ここでは別の意味で使用されています。文章を読むと、放射能についての話はなされていないので、この定義ではしっくりきません。ここでは、LDOCE’a place that is popular for entertainment or a particular activity’という意味で扱われています。日本語にするならば、「人気のある場所」(英辞朗on the WEB)ということになります。
