diehardといえば、やっぱりあの映画が思い浮かびますね。手持ちの辞書には、しっくりくる訳が無かったのでwebで調べてみると、「一心になっている、夢中になっている」（英辞郎on the WEB）という意味がありました。Urban Dictionaryには、"Someone really fanatical and devoted to something; gung-ho, committed."と書かれていました。文章中では、「熱狂的な」あたりの意味でしょうか。

また意味は違いますが、色々なサイトや辞書で調べていると、Old habits die hard「古い習慣はおいそれとは変えられない」（『ウィズダム英和辞典　第２版』三省堂）という表現をよく目にしました。よく使われる言い回しなのでしょうか、これもあわせて覚えておきたいと思います。（Astroriver）
