dead-set

dead-setには名詞で「（猟犬が獲物を知らせる）不動の姿勢」という意味があり，be dead set against ...は「…に断固反対である」という意味の表現です（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。
類義語としてはopposeやresist，withstandなどがありますが，これについては同辞書で「oppose意見などに反対することから暴力に抵抗することまで含む広い意味の語. 積極的な反抗の意が強い. これに対しresistは脅威暴力に対する防衛的な抵抗の意が強い. withstandはさらに受け身的な意が強いが, 戦い抜いて屈しないこと」のように説明しています。合わせて押さえておこうと思います。

Many years ago, private high school teacher Tomoyoshi Aoyagi had a run-in with a student over the Japan-U.S. Security Treaty that bound the two nations together as allies. The pro-treaty young man asked Aoyagi a pointed question about the alliance, which Aoyagi was dead-set against, leaving the teacher flustered. Now 73, Aoyagi is seeing that former student assume Japan's premiership for a second time.
"I'd like to applaud him for challenging me on the issue," says Aoyagi of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, 58. "But I also want him to treat people with differing opinions or perspectives with care," he added.
