to be called up
(EnDough)
Japanese Slugger Matsui Retires
New York, Dec. 27 (Jiji Press)--Japanese slugger Hideki Matsui retired from professional baseball Thursday, ending his career that spanned two decades and gave him a World Series most valuable player award in the United States and three MVPs in Japan.
"As of today, I want to end my professional baseball career," Matsui, 38, said at a press conference held in New York. After he played 10 seasons with the Japanese club Yomiuri Giants, he spent another 10 years with U.S. Major League Baseball clubs, including the New York Yankees.
Matsui was unable to conclude a contract with any MLB club before the opening of this season and ended up singing a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on April 30. He was called up in late May but was released in July after hitting just .147 with two home runs and seven runs batted in in 34 games.
