Japan Mint to produce coins for Bangladesh
Japan Mint has won its first order in the postwar era to produce coins for another country, in this case Bangladesh.
The Finance Ministry said Nov. 13 the order was placed by the central bank of Bangladesh.
The Osaka-based mint will produce 500 million 2-taka coins for delivery from April 2013.
Two taka are worth roughly 2 yen. The coin, made of stainless steel, carries an image of the country’s first president, Mujibur Rahman, and the national emblem, a water lily bordered on two sides by rice sheaves.
Bangladesh's central bank sought an international tender in July, and six countries responded.
Japan clinched the contract in November with a bid of 520 million yen ($6.5 million), the lowest.

今回採り上げるのはtenderです。tenderというとtender meatのように「〈物が〉柔らかい」という意味でしばし使われますが，その他に「（正式な）提出；提供」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。これは以前に本ブログでもEnDoughくんが採り上げられています。

そして，さらに押さえておきたいのが，この「提供」から転じた商業用語の「入札」という意味がです（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。よって，本文のinternational tenderはまさに「国際入札」のことを指しています。（Koyamamoto）
