私が生まれたころの事件ですが、初めて聞いたのは中学生の時でした。英語の先生から“Freeze!”を“please”と聞き間違えた為に、命を落とされたと聞いた時は本当に衝撃的でした。(今ではその可能性は否定されていますが・・・)

Masaichi touched on a popular argument for gun ownership that suggests malicious shooters can be stopped if more guns are carried in public.

"If we are allowed to have guns, that gives us an opportunity to use them," he said. "At the end of the day, we have to control gun ownership."

On Oct. 17, 1992, Rodney Peairs shot Yoshihiro Hattori, an exchange student at McKinley Senior High School, at close range with a laser-sighted .44 magnum revolver after the boy and another student whose family was housing him mistook Peairs' house as the venue for a Halloween party several doors away.

Dressed in their costumes, the boys rang the doorbell of the Peairs' house. Shortly afterward, Rodney Peairs came out and yelled "Freeze!" Hattori, apparently misunderstanding the command, moved toward him and was shot.

Peairs, who was eventually charged with manslaughter, claimed he fired in self-defense because he feared for his life. In May 1993, he was cleared of the charge when a local jury accepted his claim of self-defense.

今回取り上げるのはat the end of the dayです。文脈からもわかる通り、in short,to sum upなどと同じ意味であると推測できます。手持ちの辞書には「結局のところ」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)で載っていました。字面だけみると、一日考えて一日の終わりに答えを出すというようなニュアンスが伝わってきます。at the end of the dayは スピーチの中の表現ですので、活きた英語表現として日常的に使っていきたい表現です。この事件は英語学習者として、そして英語教師を目指す者として語り継いでいかなければならない事件の一つだと思いますので、この事件に関する記事を見つけたら、紹介していきたいと思います。(EnDough)
