Softbank Wants Sprint, but Maybe T-Mobile Is the Prize

The news that Japan’s Softbank is looking to buy a controlling stake in Sprint has sent shares in the operator up almost 15%, but there’s a forest out there beyond these trees: the deal push the U.S. mobile market into its final round of super-consolidation.

For now, the real price action is over at Clearwire up an amazing 70% today. That, as we covered earlier, is based on the logic that Sprint — which already owns about 49% of Clearwire – will look to take control of the mobile broadband company as part and parcel of the Softbank deal.

交渉過程の詳細はもちろん公にはされていませんが，スプリントはソフトバンクとの米国4番手のT-mobileを買収しようと計画していたのは業界内部の一致する見方です。ソフトバンクがスプリントの買収に成功した場合，もしくは第三者割当により、スプリントに資本金注入をした場合には，T-mobileの買収も，と考えるのが論理的な流れのような気がします。そのため，ここのprizeはスプリント買収に成功した場合についてくる「戦利品」，「おまけ」という意味になると解釈しました。(Minnesota)
