今回取り上げる英語表現は highs and lowsです。この表現はみなさんもご存じの通り、「浮き沈み、栄枯盛衰」を意味する(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版、大修館書店大修館書店)イディオムです。そういえば黒澤監督の『天国と地獄』(1963年)の洋題も"highs and lows"でしたね。ほかにもups and downsも同じ意味を表します。ここでは「ジョンテリー選手の天国と地獄(栄光と転落)」ということでしょうか。とても基本的な表現ですが「栄枯必衰」はなかなか英語では表しにくいのでチェックしておきます。(EnDough)
