New justice minister received donations from foreigner
New Justice Minister Keishu Tanaka received 420,000 yen in donations from a firm operated by a Chinese national over a four-year period from 2006, Tanaka's office said Thursday.
Tanaka said, however, he does not intend to resign over the donations, which may contravene Japan's political funding law, while Shinzo Abe, leader of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party, expressed his intention to seek the minister's resignation, saying, "If it's true, we'll inevitably demand he step down."
Tanaka's office said the ruling Democratic Party of Japan's branch in Kanagawa Prefecture's No. 5 constituency that Tanaka represents had received 60,000 to 150,000 yen annually from the Chinese-controlled firm in Yokohama from 2006 to 2009.
