Losing Vidic will cost United the title

IT is early days in the title race but already Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow from which they will not recover.
Before the season started I did not think they were strong enough to win the title despite all their new signings.
With the loss of Nemanja Vidic now for two months I am even more convinced that the Premier League trophy will either be staying put or heading to Stamford Bridge.
In truth his loss last season probably cost them the title.
For me they are looking a lot more vulnerable now.

この一文は筆者の優勝予想の2チームを表現したものです。stay putは「〈人・物・事が〉動かないでいる」という意味(『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版、大修館書店)です。ここでは「Premier League trophyが動かないでいる」となるので、昨シーズン優勝したマンチェスター・Cの連続優勝の可能性を述べています。さらに、Stamford Bridgeは、現在リーグ首位を走っているチェルシーFCのことを指しています。そこに同チームのホームスタジアムがあるからです。それを踏まえると、or以下はTrophyがこのスタジアムに向かうという事なので「チェルシーが優勝する」という事を表します。
ですので赤文字を含んだ一文を意訳すると、「ビディッチが2カ月間離脱するなら、優勝するのはチェルシーかマンチェスターCだろうと私は確信さえしている」となります。(EnDough)
