What the title of J.K. Rowling's first adult novel, "A Casual Vacancy," brings to mind is pleasure: that a writer with such standing (in certain circles) has the derring-do and moxie to turn her back on the audience that first brought her fame, some years ago, and meet them again, those same people. Only it's years later, and now they're grownups. Holding their own credit cards, at the ready for this new book.

最初にthe derring-doですが、こちらは『リーダーズ英和辞典』によると「勇敢な行動；捨て身の戦法」とありました。初出はチョーサーの作品のようで、1374年であるとされていました(リンク先)。またLDOCEの定義では “very brave actions like the ones that happens in adventure stories”とあります。

次いでmoxieですが、「元気、気力；積極性」という意味があるようです。また、同辞書によると、清涼飲料水Moxieが由来のようです。さらにLDOCEを参照してみると“courage and determination”という定義が与えられています。

まるでThe Philosopher’s Stoneに登場する主人公を形容する言葉のようです。もしかしたら、それを意識してのことばの選択だったのかもしれません。それと同時に思うのは、「ハリー・ポッター」シリーズの作者であるというイメージはなかなか払拭できないだろう、ということです。（Othello）
