China Daily asserts Senkaku claim in ad spreads in U.S. newspapers
WASHINGTON (Jiji Press)--The China Daily ran two advertising spreads in Friday editions of The New York Times and The Washington Post that asserted China's claim to the Senkaku Islands, called Diaoyu in China.
In the ads, titled "Diaoyu Islands Belong to China," China's major English-language newspaper said the East China Sea islands are "inherent territory of China since ancient times."
"China has indisputable sovereignty over the islands," said the ads, which occupied a full two pages in
The New York Times and most of two pages in The Washington Post.
Showing a color image of the uninhabited islands, the ads said the earliest historical record of Diaoyu and related places can be found in a book published in China in 1403.
The islands were under China's jurisdiction in the Ming dynasty, which ended in 1644, they claimed.
