JAPAN‘S TOKUDA CROWNED FREESTYLE FOOTBALL WORLD CHAMPION
Japanese baller Kotaro Tokuda dazzled his way to the world freestyle football title, winning the Red Bull Street Style 2012 World Final at the Roman amphitheatre of Lecce (Italy) in front of World Cup winners Fabio Cannavaro and Pippo Inzaghi. Italy greats Cannavaro and Inzaghi handed the trophy over to the 22-year-old Japanese.
I have played football all my life but I have never seen such ball control,“ said Cannavaro, who captained Italy to World Cup victory in 2006. „The world’s top 16 freestyle ballers are exceptional talents.“ Perched around the sold-out freestyle arena in the heart of the picturesque Old Town of Lecce, 15,000 fans in the Public Viewing area cheered when Tokuda beat Daniel Dennehy (IRL) with 4-1 votes of the five-member jury.
Sean Garnier (FRA), who won the first World Final of the growing sport in 2008 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, was knocked out at the round of 16 by local favorite Gunther Celli, who snatched third place to complete an Italian fairytale ending to the competition. 2010 champion Anders Solum from Norway, winner of the trophy in Cape Town, South Africa, failed to advance to the final draw. 150 qualifying tournaments worldwide involving more than 5,000 competitors took place since January 2012 and a total of 53 nations sent ballers to the World Final in Italy.
"The new champion has all my respect,“ said AC Milan great Inzaghi. "Tokuda came up with a new highlight in each of his rounds and fully deserved the title."
