Tiaoyutai

今度は台湾のfishing flotillaです。台湾では「釣魚台」Tiaoyutaiと呼ぶのですね。あー、ややこしや。(UG)

70 Taiwan fishing boats head to Senkakus to protest "nationalization"
YILAN, Taiwan, Sept. 24, Kyodo

Seventy Taiwanese fishing boats set sail from the northeastern Taiwanese port of Yilan on Monday, heading toward the Senkaku Islands to protest against Japan's nationalization of the disputed isles in the East China Sea.

The vessels are expected to arrive in waters outside the Japanese-controlled islands Tuesday morning. The isles are also claimed by China.

Representatives of Taiwanese fishermen told reporters that the boats will gather in waters about 37 kilometers southwest of the Senkakus and sail around the islands in protest at Japan's decision earlier this month to nationalize them.

They said there is no plan to land on the islands, known in China as Diaoyu and in Taiwan as Tiaoyutai.

Taiwanese fishermen say they fear the Japanese nationalization decision could make it impossible for them to operate in waters around the Senkakus, their traditional fishing grounds.

The Taiwanese vessels that set sail from Yilan carried banners proclaiming "Tiaoyutai belongs to Taiwan" and "We must protect our fishing rights."

The vessels also carried a group of Taiwan journalists.

Fishermen based in Yilan said fishing boats from other Taiwanese ports may join the protest.
