13 missing after fishing boat sinks off Miyagi

Japan’s coast guard was searching Monday for 13 fishermen missing since their boat sank after colliding with a large cargo vessel.

Choppy seas were hampering the rescue efforts, which were set to continue as night fell, a coastguard spokesman told AFP.

The 12 Japanese and one Indonesian remained unaccounted for at 6 p.m., nearly 16 hours after the two vessels collided some 900 kilometers off the Pacific coast of Miyagi, the coast guard said.

The 119-ton tuna-fishing boat, Horiei Maru, had 22 crew members on board—17 Japanese and five Indonesians, and nine of them were rescued by another ship in the area.

The Panamanian-flagged 25,000-ton cargo ship Nikkei Tiger was undamaged and its crew of 21 was said to be safe.

Two coast guard planes, a Japanese air-force patrol plane, several fellow fishing boats and the cargo ship were involved in the search, a coast guard official said.

Two coast guard patrol ships were struggling against choppy waters to reach the area, he said.
