be under way、 fresh再び
先日UG先生からのご指名質問がありました。内容はfreshの意味合いについてです。
先生のコメントにもあるように、freshの意味合いは難しく、「freshには「過去に同種のことが繰り返し起き、それがしばらくの休止を経て、再び起きる」という意味合いが隠されています」。実際に、このfreshは各紙面でもよく見かけますが、見落としてしまいがちです。今日21日金曜日付けのThe Independentでは、同じ意味合いのfreshを用いた見出しと記事がありましたので、アップしておきます。
また記事の冒頭にあるbe under wayは「進行中」という意味です。よく使われる表現なので覚えておいて損はないでしょう。冒頭箇所を試訳してみると――freshの意味合いが思い通りの訳になりませんが――「反イスラムの映像作品を断絶さんとする怒りと共に、再び各国のイスラム社会にて抗議活動が今起こっている。」となるかと思います。(Othello)

Fresh protests are under way today in countries across the Muslim world as the anger over an anti-Muslim film refuses to abate.
In Pakistan, which has declared today a national holiday and a 'day of love' for the Prophet Mohammad, a driver for a Pakistani TV reporter was killed when police fired shots to disperse protesters in Peshawar.
The film, entitled The Innocence of Muslims, has already sparked violent protests worldwide with at least 30 people dead, including two in Pakistan.
