In a now familiar ritual, Apple’s Asian fans jammed the tech juggernaut’s shops in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore to pick up the latest version of its iPhone.

Eager buyers formed long lines at Apple stores in Australia and Japan to be the first to get their hands on the latest version of the smartphone. In Hong Kong, buyers had to sign up online for the chance to pick up the device at a preset time. The first customers were greeted by staff cheering, clapping, chanting “iPhone 5! iPhone 5!” and high-fiving them as they were escorted through the front door.

The smartphone is also being launched in the U.S., UK, Canada, France and Germany on Friday and will go on sale in 22 more countries a week later. The iPhone 5 is thinner, lighter, has a taller screen, faster processor, updated software and can work on faster “fourth generation” mobile networks.

Order numbers indicate the iPhone 5 has overcome initial lukewarm reviews. Apple received 2 million orders in the first 24 hours of announcing its release date, more than twice the number for the iPhone 4S in the same period when that phone launched a year ago.

今回のthe tech juggernaut’s shopsのthe tech juggernautはApple社の言い換えで、shopはその販売店のことです。

juggernautはヒンドゥー教のヴィシュヌ神の八番目の化身であるクリシュナの異名であるJagannāth（ジャガンナート）から来ています。とても怪力で、様々な伝説が残されているそうです。イギリス英語では、「(巨大な重量を持つ)乗り物」のことも指すようで、LDOCEにも"a very large vehicle that carries goods over long distances"と定義されています。

そのLDOCEの第２義には"a very powerful force, organization etc whose effect or influence cannot be stopped"ともあり、要するに「（誰も止めることができないほどの）莫大な組織（や力）」であり、今のApple社の現状をそのまま表現していると思います。先日、私がearth-shatteringについて述べた記事でも、iPhone5の発売がアメリカ経済を押し上げると専門家が言う程です。(http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20120917/1347883727)
