U.N chief Ban "increasingly troubled" by disputed isles
NEW YORK, Sept. 19, Kyodo

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on Wednesday expressed concerns about escalating tensions between Japan and China over the Japanese government's move to put under state control three East China Sea islands, claimed also by China.

"I am increasingly troubled by rising tensions in the region over territorial disputes," the U.N. chief told reporters at a press conference ahead the annual gathering of world leaders that kicks off next week at the General Assembly.

Ban was "closely following" what is going on in Asia and was "particularly looking" at what ramifications the issue had on the bilateral relationship that has soured over the islets, which the Japanese call the Senkakus and the Chinese the Diaoyus.

As the head of the United Nations, Ban stressed he was not in a position take sides on the matter.
Instead he expressed hope that concerned parties will meet on the sidelines of the General Assembly to hold talks to work towards resolving territorial disputes.
"
I urge all concerned, concerned parties, to resolve the dispute peacefully through a dialogue," he said. "Efforts must continue to build a mutual trust and confidence to avoid tensions in the region."
