for the baby to go out with the bath water (throw the baby out with the bath water)

『リア王』の劇評のブログ記事に続きThe Guardianに掲載されていた『マクベス』の劇評も見てみたいと思います。前回の記事の劇評家とは違う人物ですが、最後のパラグラフに気になる表現がありました。

Streatfeild's softly spoken Macbeth has a sensitive core and slightly metrosexual leanings: on ascending to the throne, he seems only too eager to cast off dun fighting clothes for a fetching leather tunic in a shade that matches his wife's eye shadow. Claudie Blakley's willowy Lady Macbeth is less a remorseless she-devil than a tender reed liable to snap; and David Ganly's Banquo has a brusque, uncompromising presence. But in terms of conceptual development, it may have made more sense for the baby to go out with the bath water.

今まで観てきた『マクベス』の登場人物像を考えてみても、今回の劇の登場人物の造形とは異なります。記事にあるように、なよなよとした敏感な性格で服装などについて過敏に気にするGeoffrey Streatfeild演じるマクベスは、あまりありませんし、クラウディー・バックレー演じるマクベス夫人がほっそりとして優雅ではなく、どこか狂気さえ感じていました。バンクォーが無愛想で愚直な姿というのも、あまり見たことがありません。

ここで最後の赤字に注目してみます。このfor the baby to go out with the bath waterですが、こちらはthrow the baby out with the bath waterの捩りで｢大事なものを無用なものと一緒に流す｣という意味です。こちらは、赤ちゃんをお風呂の水と一緒に流してしまうという意味の比喩的な表現で、以前Stingがインタビューで使っていたので覚えていました。

また同文のconceptual developmentは、｢概念の開発｣ですが、前後を考えると、ここでは｢まったく新しい登場人物像｣ととった方が自然でしょう。

以上を踏まえると｢それまで積み上げられた登場人物のイメージから新しい登場人物像に作りかえることは、何か大事なものを無用なものと一緒に流してしまうという意味するのだろう｣という意味合いになると思います。(Othello)
