Powerful typhoon rips through Okinawa

TOKYO, Aug. 26, Kyodo

One of the most powerful typhoons in many years, packing gusts of up to 252 kilometers per hour, ripped through Okinawa's main island at around 9 p.m. Sunday, with the Japan Meteorological Agency calling for a maximum alert as the typhoon could still bring record rain and wind to the region through Monday.

The traffic system in Okinawa Prefecture has been paralyzed, with all flights to and from Naha, the capital of the prefecture, and ships linking the main island with other places already cancelled. Roads and bus services have been closed on the island, while an elevated rail link in Naha city has been shut down.

今回は台風や竜巻の通過に関して使われるrip throughです。LDOCEには” rip through something : to move through a place quickly and with violent force ” とあり、速いスピードで動いて被害をもたらす状況だそうです。何か紙を乱暴に引き裂く時のスピードをイメージすればいいのではないでしょうか。(Minnesota)
