それを伝えるDaily Yomiuriにふつうではなかなかお目にかかれない表現が使われていました。最後の箇所に、「翼の一部（風切羽）切って飛べないようにしてあったはずが、飼育員が知らないうちに羽がはえてしまい、飛べるようになったと」とありますが、この「飼育員が知らないうちに」を表すのが
unbeknownst（or unbeknow） to~です。
形から推測できるように、un-に beknown（廃語）がついたもので、"without (one's) knowledge of~"と同義です。「人知れず」「人に気づかれることなく」などと訳せます。ちなみにWebster（Online）には Unbeknownst to us rumors were flying. Unbeknownst to me, my mother was planning a party.などの例文があります。
なおこれはかなり堅い言い回しなので、話すときに使うと滑稽に響きますのでご注意を。私自身、実は大学時代に苦い思い出があります。当時、やたらこうした語句を仕入れて、どんどん使ってみようということで、debateやspeechなどで「多発」していたのですが、あるとき知り合いの英国人にpedanticで、bookishだとたしなめられたことがありました。確かに...。若き日の暴走でした。（UG）

Freed flamingo avoids capture, outwits zealous zoo workers

The flamingo that escaped from Asahiyama Zoo walks in Lake Komuke in Monbetsu, Hokkaido, while zoo staff follow it on Aug. 18
Staff in charge of animal breeding at the Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, are having many sleepless nights this summer due to concern for a greater flamingo that escaped from the zoo on July 18.
Asahiyama rivals Tokyo's Ueno Zoological Gardens in terms of the number of visitors, as the Hokkaido zoo is famous for displaying animals in ways that allow visitors to see them in very natural habitats.
The bird has now evaded capture three times and it apparently has regained its wild instincts and flown across large parts of Hokkaido.
Zoo officials were forced to report the bird as "lost property" to police.
The flamingo is one of 24 kept at the zoo and it flew over an about 1.2-meter-high fence on July 18.
Though parts of the bird's wings had been clipped to prevent flight, its feathers had grown back unbeknownst to zoo staff, allowing it to fly.
